The 12-3-30 Treadmill Workout, Explained Honestly

Twelve per cent incline, three miles an hour, thirty minutes. What the viral workout does well, what it does not, and how to start safely.

The 12-3-30 workout is simple: set the treadmill to a 12% incline and 3 miles per hour (about 4.8 km/h), and walk for 30 minutes. It went viral because it is hard enough to feel like a workout but easy on the joints.

What it does well

Incline walking raises your heart rate far more than walking on the flat, usually landing people in their moderate-intensity “zone 2–3” range. It works the calves, hamstrings and glutes, and it is accessible to people who dislike running.

What it does not do

It will not replace strength training for building muscle, and it is not magic for fat loss — calories burned depend on your weight, fitness and consistency. And 30 minutes at 12% is a big jump if you are new to it.

How to start safely

  1. Begin at 5–6% incline for 15–20 minutes.
  2. Add 1–2% incline or 5 minutes each week.
  3. Stand tall and let your arms swing; hanging on to the rails cancels much of the effort.
  4. If you have knee, hip, back or heart concerns, check with your doctor first.

To see where your heart rate should sit during the session, work out your zones below.
